Adopt Se fa un ‘freddo cane’

Mixed Breed · Unknown

But what does the dog have to do with the cold? In the colloquial saying, a reference to a condition of the dog that unfortunately has not yet been completely abandoned. This idiomatic expression evokes an image of intense and almost unbearable cold and seems to be exclusive to Italian culture, whose origin is likely attributable to the way people in the Middle Ages related to the dog, which was certainly not a companion animal, nor did it receive the attention that many of us give it today: it was mainly the guardian of property and, for this reason, left outdoors, usually chained, exposed to the cold and the elements. From here comes the saying 'cold dog' or 'cold like a dog', used to say about even very low temperatures that the dog could withstand. Another interpretation of the saying is also accredited online, according to which the cold would stick to the bones and bite, just as a dog might bite. Finally, a third meaning is traced back, instead, to the negative connotation of the dog linked to the ancient Roman game of dice: the "dog's blow" was, indeed, the most unfortunate roll, with the lowest score: from here the correlation between the word "dog" and the word "misfortune". As mentioned, "it's a cold dog" is an exclusive of the Italian language, while other cultures either use figuratively different animals from the dog -as is the case with the French who use the expression "il fait un froid de canard", literally "a cold like a duck"- or idiomatic expressions equally effective but in which the animal is absent -such as the Spanish "hace un frío que pela", meaning "it's so cold it peels". Then there are the Eskimos, very practical and pragmatic, whose saying "today is cold for two dogs" would also (not exactly known thanks to which linguistic contacts) be the origin of the Italian saying. It is an old custom of the Eskimo peoples to use phrases that referred to the dog to explain the excessive cold they felt: in the expression "today is cold for two dogs", the number of dogs becomes a unit of measurement to describe the intensity of the cold, suggesting that the more dogs need to be brought inside the igloo to warm up the environment better, the more intense the cold is. Regardless of the saying, what we need to be aware of today is that when it's cold, it's cold for everyone, including domestic animals: leaving them outside the house is not the right choice, while a setup inside the house -especially for the night- protects the dog from the point of view of safety, health and well-being, satisfying its need for belonging, helping it to rest better and completely eliminating not only the suffering from the cold, but also the stress related to exposure to continuous environmental stimuli.
